Conventions Of Hip Hop Pop Music Videos
The first convention of hip hop music videos that I have noticed is that the artists are portrayed as powerful individuals straight from the start. This dominance and power is demonstrated through the use of camera angles. An example of camera angles being used to make the artist look powerful is the use of the low angle shot in hip hop music videos. As shown below, the artists look strong and dominant when the camera is looking up to them. (Jay Z, Kanye West- Otis) (R. Kelly- Ignition Remix)
The second convention of hip hop music videos that I have noticed is that the artists wear a lot of expensive looking jewellery. For example, you will find the hip hop artists wearing watches, chains and earrings throughout the music videos. Modern hip hop artists such as Future are usually seen to be wearing watches that are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Here is an example of Future wearing an expensive watch in his hit track 'March Madness'.
The next convention that I have noticed is that backup singers are used very often during the chorus. Often, the backup singers will be African American and will sing in a soul music style. For example, in The Notorious BIG's 'I Love The Dough', the chorus is sang by female backup singers. ( The backup singers can be heard around the 1:10 mark.
