Conventions Of Rock Music Videos

The first convention of rock music videos that I have noticed is that they are mainly performance based videos. Often, you will find that the video consists of the rock group playing on stage. An example of this is Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' music video.

The second convention that I have noticed within rock music videos is the use of the props. I have noticed that the props used in Rock Music videos are very simple and nothing too extraordinary.
Usually, the props will consist of a guitar, a set of drums and a microphone.The reason that this is done is to give the music video
that tough, rough and ready feeling, it is like they don't want you to focus on their music video, they just want their music to do the talking.

The next convention of rock music videos that I have noticed is the style of lighting that is used. The most common type of lighting used in rock music videos is strobe lighting.The reason that strobe lighting is used is because it creates a hectic atmosphere and replicated the performance for the viewer. The viewer will like they are part of the crowd in the video. Hybrid music videos involve a combination of 3 different types of music video media. This combination involves concept, narrative and performance. The reason that hybrid music videos have become so popular is because they provide a variety of elements within the video. Previously, music videos just contained performances or told a story line, but now, hybrid videos give you everything. The example which I have chosen which best demonstrates a hybrid music video is Kelly Clarkson's 'Since U Been Gone'. The reason that I picked this music video is because of it's combination of narrative and performance. Firstly, the lyrics say 'Here's the thing, we started off friends', a picture of Kelly holding the friendship bracelet appears on the screen. Filming Locations For Gangsta's Paradise

For our Gansgta's Paradise music video, I think that the locations that I could use are relatively local. In my opinion, small and well hidden areas work best to accompany the lyrics of this song simply because it is a very solemn song with a lot of meanings behind the lyrics. Often, you will find that the lyrics being used in this song are talking about death and crime, so we also need naturally dark area, maybe just using lamppost for a source of lighting. As you can see from this entry, there are trees and bushes overshadowing it, so it would provide a good level of darkness for us. Although, because it will be very dark if we film at night, we would need some form of natural lighting. Overall, this location could be very convenient for filming some parts of our music video, because it is on my road, and my partner lives a 15 minute walk away from this location.
