How Music Videos Have Progressed Through The Years
During the first few years of music videos (1960's), the videos consisted of performance videos, where you could watch as if it was a gig. For example, Nancy Sinatra's 'These Boots Are Made For Walking' music video is just footage of her performance. (Click To View Video)

As the years went by, performance based music videos began to change. The main groups behind this change were rock and heavy metal groups such as RUN-DMC. RUN-DMC's 'Walk This Way' was one of the top hits of the 80's, and it wasn't just because of the song. The music video for 'Walk This Way' showed the band members performing in many different locations, sometimes on stage and sometimes in small rooms by themselves. In addition to this, there were also scenes which had no relevance to the music video. For example, there was a part in the music video where the singer grabbed his microphone stand and started to smash the guitar into the wall. This started a revolution of abstract music videos being created, as it gave people a reason to listen to their music without just relying on the quality of their music. They could create a good music video which could create more hype and excitement for their song. (Click for full video)

There are also concept music videos. Concept music videos are music videos which are based off a particular theme. For example, the 2014 World Cup theme song 'Ole Ola' by Pitbull shows the Brazilian and Football culture, with highlights from the previous world cups form 2006 and 2010. Therefore , the video directly relates to the song. Ole Ola Music Video Lyric
Music videos once again re-invented themselves in the 2000's. The main music video style at that point was the hybrid music video. A hybrid music video consists of performance scenes as well the concept and narrative, the lyrics may be matching the narrative, and when the chorus comes around, the scene will switch to the artists actually performing on stage. An example of a hybrid music video is 'Easy Way Out' by Gotye. Gotye- Easy Way Out
