Performance vs Narrative Music Videos
In this blog post, I will be explaining performance and narrative style music videos. Both of these music video styles have their positives and their negatives and both of them are very popular in the music industry.
During performance music videos, the band or the artist will be shown playing throughout the majority of the video, with very little variety of anything else. Usually, you will find that the props used in performance music videos are just the instruments being used in the song. Often, you will find that bands who have a low budget would use performance music videos because it doesn't cost a lot of money to make a performance music video (you barely need any props and you can film in just one location). An example of a performance music video is The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' 'By The Way' music video. In this video, all that you see is the band performing and the props used are just the drum set and guitar.
The main aim of a narrative music video is to tell a story through a chronological pattern of scenes, usually involving the artist. Often, you will find that the video links in well to the lyrics, this compliments the music lyrics well, as well as this, it enables the listeners to develop an understanding of the meanings of the lyrics. An example of a narrative music video is Katy Perry's 'Last Friday Night' music video. In the song, the lyrics say 'Pictures of last night ended up online'. Shortly after, the music video shows a shot of Katy's laptop on what looks to be a Facebook equivalent, with Katy's party pictures all over it.
