Performance vs Narrative Music Videos

Image
In this blog post, I will be explaining performance and narrative style music videos. Both of these music video styles have their positives and their negatives and both of them are very popular in the music industry. During performance music videos, the band or the artist will be shown playing throughout the majority of the video, with very little variety of anything else. Usually, you will find that the props used in performance music videos are just the instruments being used in the song. Often, you will find that bands who have a low budget would use performance music videos because it doesn't cost a lot of money to make a performance music video (you barely need any props and you can film in just one location). An example of a performance music video is The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' ' By The Way ' music video. In this video, all that you see is the band performing and the props used are just the drum set and guitar. The main aim of a narra...

Conventions Of Rock Music Videos

Image
The first convention of rock music videos that I have noticed is that they are mainly performance based videos. Often, you will find that the video consists of the rock group playing on stage. An example of this is Nirvana's ' Smells Like Teen Spirit ' music video. The second convention that I have noticed within rock music videos is the use of the props. I have noticed that the props used in Rock Music videos are very simple and nothing too extraordinary. Usually, the props will consist of a guitar, a set of drums and a microphone. The reason that this is done is to give the music video that tough, rough and ready feeling, it is like they don't want you to focus on their music video, they just want their music to do the talking. The next convention of rock music videos that I have noticed is the style of lighting that is used. The most common type of lighting used in rock music videos is strobe lighting. The reason that strobe lighting is used is because it ...

Conventions Of Hip Hop Pop Music Videos

Image
The first convention of hip hop music videos that I have noticed is that the artists are portrayed as powerful individuals straight from the start. This dominance and power is demonstrated through the use of camera angles. An example of camera angles being used to make the artist look powerful is the use of the low angle shot in hip hop music videos. As shown below, the artists look strong and dominant when the camera is looking up to them. ( Jay Z, Kanye West- Otis ) ( R. Kelly- Ignition Remix ) The second convention of hip hop music videos that I have noticed is that the artists wear a lot of expensive looking jewellery. For example, you will find the hip hop artists wearing watches, chains and earrings throughout the music videos. Modern hip hop artists such as Future are usually seen to be wearing watches that are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Here is an example of Future wearing an expensive watch in his hit track ' March Madness '. The next conventio...

How Music Videos Have Progressed Through The Years

Image
During the first few years of music videos (1960's), the videos consisted of performance videos, where you could watch as if it was a gig. For example, Nancy Sinatra's 'These Boots Are Made For Walking' music video is just footage of her performance. ( Click To View Video ) As the years went by, performance based music videos began to change. The main groups behind this change were rock and heavy metal groups such as RUN-DMC. RUN-DMC's 'Walk This Way' was one of the top hits of the 80's, and it wasn't just because of the song. The music video for 'Walk This Way' showed the band members performing in many different locations, sometimes on stage and sometimes in small rooms by themselves. In addition to this, there were also scenes which had no relevance to the music video. For example, there was a part in the music video where the singer  grabbed his microphone stand and started to smash the guitar into the wall. This started a rev...

Clothing for the hip hop genre

Image
In the hip hop genre, you will find that the clothing used mainly consists of 2 types of clothing. firstly, there is the 'gangster' style clothing. This is where the hip hop artist will be wearing a lot of jewellery, snapbacks, chains, stylish trainers, jeans and american football jerseys. For example, hip hop star Ludacris has been seen wearing the official football jersey of the Michigan Wolverines, with earrings and a gold chain around his neck. ( http://www.complex.com/music/2012/09/100-photos-of-rappers-in-sports-jerseys/62 ) On the other hand, there is the more sophisticated style of clothing for hip hop artists. This sophisticated style may include the hip hop artist wearing a suit, a nice watch, polished shoes and shades. Often, you will that this more classy style appears more in modern hip hop music videos, where as early in the 2000's and the 1990's was when hip hop artists would wear gold chains and earrings etc. Here is an example of current hip hop a...

Mise En Scene- 50 Cent In Da Club (Hip Hop)

Image
The genre that  have chosen to make a music video on is hip hop. To gain knowledge and understanding of how hip hop music videos are created, I must research how other top tier hip hop artists have conducted their music videos. For example, I must pay close attention to aspects such as body language, clothing, rhythm and the amount of lip syncing used. Firstly, I noticed that on 50 Cent's 'In Da Club' music video that the music company is listed ( Shady Aftermath). This gives me and my partner the idea that we need to create a name for a music company and include it in the start of our music video. Secondly, I must pay close attention to the clothing that has been used in 50 Cent's 'In Da Club' music video. As I play through the video, I can see that 50 Cent is wearing earrings. This is a common feature within hip hop music videos because you will always find jewellery being used in music videos. Another aspect that I have noticed within hip hop mu...

Diss Tracks

Image
A diss track is a track that is produced by one artist or group of artists in order to disrespect rival artists. Often, you will find that diss tracks usually take place within the hip hop industry, rather than other genre industries such as pop or indie music. An example of a world renouned, world famous diss track is Tupac Shakur's 'Hit Em Up', There was an ongoing rivalry between Tupac and The Notorious BIG, so Tupac chose to make a diss track toward The Notorious BIG. In the diss track, you can see an extra on the video who looks similar to The Notorious BIG, this was done to mock him without him actually being there. I have used this specific example because this is what started off the diss tracks that soon followed. Many may argue that diss tracks have become a popular ever since this world famous diss track was released. Nowadays, the diss tracks still continue within the hip hop industry. For example, J Cole released a diss track towards Kanye West in D...
